Cold sores or fever blisters occur when the body is infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV). They are small itchy blisters that normally appear around the outside of your lips or mouth. Though rarely, these can also occur on your nose or cheeks. A person can have the virus without knowing it, at least not until a cold sore appears on the corner of their mouth. Studies have shown that as many as two-thirds of the world’s population under 50 is infected with HSV.

This virus can never be defeated, which means once you get infected, you have it for life. People normally contract it through small cracks in the skin.
If you have the virus, cold sores can develop due to a number of reasons. Some of these include:

  • Colds or other respiratory infections
  • Sun or wind exposure without protection
